About This Calculator

The Body Fat Percentage Calculator estimates your body composition using the U.S. Navy circumference method. Unlike BMI, body fat percentage distinguishes between fat mass and lean mass, giving you a clearer picture of your fitness level. Body fat percentage is crucial for understanding your true fitness level. Two people can weigh the same but have vastly different body compositions. An athlete with lots of muscle may be "overweight" by BMI but have low body fat. This calculator uses a scientifically validated formula that's been used by the U.S. Navy for decades. While not as accurate as lab methods like DEXA scans, it provides a reliable estimate using only a tape measure.

How to Use

  1. 1Select your gender
  2. 2Enter your height and weight
  3. 3Measure and enter waist circumference at navel level
  4. 4Measure and enter neck circumference
  5. 5Women: also measure hip circumference
  6. 6View your estimated body fat percentage and category

Formula

Men: 495/(1.0324 - 0.19077×log10(waist-neck) + 0.15456×log10(height)) - 450

The U.S. Navy body fat formula uses body circumference measurements and height to estimate body fat percentage. It's reasonably accurate (within 3-4% of DEXA scans) and requires no special equipment.

FAQ

The U.S. Navy method is typically within 3-4% of DEXA scans for most people. Accuracy depends on taking consistent, correct measurements. It's less accurate for very lean or very overweight individuals.

Measure at your navel (belly button) level, not at your narrowest point. Stand relaxed, don't suck in your stomach. Wrap the tape snugly but not tight enough to compress skin.

For men: 10-20% is healthy, 6-13% is athletic. For women: 18-28% is healthy, 14-20% is athletic. Women naturally carry more essential fat. Essential fat (minimum for health) is 2-5% for men, 10-13% for women.

BMI only considers height and weight, so muscular people appear "overweight." Body fat percentage directly measures fat vs. lean mass, giving a clearer picture of health and fitness.

Visible abs typically appear around 10-14% for men and 16-20% for women. The exact percentage varies based on genetics and where you store fat.
